The Ekati Diamond Mine (named after the Tlicho word signifying 'fat lake') is Canada's first surface and underground precious stone mine. It formally started generation in October 1998, after broad investigation and advancement work going over to 1981. Like Diavik, the Ekati mine site is spotted in the Lac de Gras area of the Northwest Territories, give or take 300 kilometers northeast of Yellowknife.
